2008 BMW 3-Series Review

Overview
The BMW 3 Series' reputation as the world's most popular range of sport sedans remains undisturbed. A successor to the BMW 1600, the 3 Series was one of the first compact sedans to offer the performance of a sports car; even today it continues to provide the benchmark in sport sedans. Additions for this year include a convertible with a hardtop option and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) sedan. The coupe has been redesigned with an AWD configuration. This is how the lineup now reads: Sedan 328i and coupe 328i; all-wheel-drive in 328xi and 335i models, an AWD 335xi sedan, and a two-door convertible in 328i or 335i versions, both of which are mid-season additions. Wagons are available as 328i and 328xi.
Engine and Performance
The BMW 3 Series has always delivered an impressive balance between ride quality and handling. Standard across all models is a 3.0-liter, in-line, six-cylinder engine. The 328i and 328xi produce 230 horsepower; while the turbo-charged 335i and 335xi give 300 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, while a six-speed Steptronic automatic is optional. This model offers fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The greatness of the BMW 3 Series lies in its handling and control, both of which are enhanced by the superior technology of the suspension, steering and brakes. With a road feel that few others can match; an engine that loves to rev; and electronic wizardry, the 3 Series adds up to a truly exhilarating driving experience.
Body and Styling
The 3 Series has BMW's signature double-kidney grille and the classic sculpted look of other BMW models. Clear-lens, xenon swivel headlights sit round the front corners. The interiors are designed for maximum comfort, with superb build quality, supportive seats, a simple dash and neat analog gauges. A keyless, multifunctional remote with a start/stop push-button feature has to be inserted into the dash to start the engine. The BMW 3 Series sport sedans are characterized by high-technology features like the iDrive, which can be quite difficult to operate. They are also priced much higher than other sedans in the same segment.
Safety Features
Standard on all BMW 3 series models are anti-lock brakes; traction and anti-skid control; and front side air bags. Side air bags are standard on all except the convertibles. BMW's active steering is now standard on all rear-wheel-drive models.
