2008 BMW 6-Series Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
The 2008 BMW 6 Series is a carryover from last year. This four-passenger, luxury sports car line has two doors and rear-wheel drive; and comes in two trims: 650i coupe and 650i convertible. With chiseled exteriors, aggressive new lines, and well laid-out interiors; as well as outstanding performance, handling and stability, the 2008 BMW 6 Series is vintage BMW all the way, enjoying cult status.
Under BMW's full maintenance program, the owner gets to enjoy factory-recommended maintenance for four years or 50,000 miles. The program also includes items that need replacement (provided the wear and tear in the vehicle exceeds BMW specifications). |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
Raw energy forked out by a 4.8-liter, 360-horsepower, V-8 engine takes you from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, using the latest in engine technology to produce a wide band of power. Standard on both trims is a six-speed Sequential Manual Transmission (SMT) with overdrive; while a six-speed automatic transmission with overdrive comes as an option. Among standard features is BMW's dynamic drive control, which adjusts suspension, throttle and SMT/automatic transmission settings; and BMW's active steering, which accelerates low-speed steering response and makes room for maximum maneuverability, especially on the highway. The large 650i coupe is a combination of modest weight and raw power, making for quick acceleration at any speed. Although not quite as nimble as the smaller 3 Series coupe, the 650i comes out on top when pushed hard. Active roll stabilization causes the coupe to hold tight round corners, while the lightweight suspension maintains traction and flattens out the ride. The range of transmission options allows the BMW 6 Series to adapt to different driving styles. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
Bristling with the latest technology, the '6' is definitive BMW, providing the benchmark for drop-dead looks, precision and performance. The sculpted profile and clean lines have a rich and vibrant quality. Coupe and convertible both offer the ultimate combination of comfort, luxury and sporty performance. Notable additions for the convertible are the power soft top and heated glass rear window. The BMW 6 Series comes with a luxurious cockpit, premium leather upholstery, wood trimmings, dual-zone automatic climate control, adaptive headlights, Bluetooth interface, and a DVD-based GPS navigation system. It also features BMWs iDrive control, which, however, takes some time getting used to. The 6 Series offers scope for lots of customization. |

Safety Features |
|
| |
Anti-lock brakes; traction and anti-skid control; BMW's active roll stabilization; and BMW's dynamic drive control are standard across the BMW 6 series models. While front side air bags and front knee air bags are standard, the coupe adds head-protection with tubular side air bags. |
