2008 BMW 7-Series Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
The 7 Series is BMW's flagship luxury sedan. The ultimate driving machine in its class, it offer unparalleled levels of power, performance and precision. The 2008 750i sedan and the 760Li sedan are carryovers from 2007. Added to the lineup midyear is the sporty Alpina B7 with its 500-horsepower, 4.4-liter, V-8 engine. The BMW 7 Series comes as a four-door, five-passenger, luxury or luxury sports sedan. It is available in four trims, ranging from the 750i to the 760Li sedan. The 7 Series costs more than its competitors; has hi-tech gizmos that might distract; and an iDrive control system that requires a thorough study of the manual to operate. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The BMW 750i sedan is powered by a standard 4.8-liter, V-8 engine that delivers 360 horsepower. It gives a mileage rating of 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The 760Li sedan is equipped with a standard 6.0-liter, V-12 that pumps out 438 horsepower and achieves mileage of 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. A six-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard. The most important innovation in the 7 Series is the iDrive, which controls onboard telematics, GPS navigation, internet access, BMW Assist (for emergencies), as well as climate and audio settings. Even at top speeds, engine and wind noise is minimal. Steering is classic BMW, offering both precision and feedback. The brake pedal is touchy and the stopping impressive. A firm suspension simply flattens out bumps for the smoothest ride. Active roll stabilization comes into play and checks body tilt during cornering. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
The 7 Series has classic BMW styling: the bustle-like rear end; the character-line running from the bulging front wheel right to the rear; and the hood with additional detailing. The headlamps are more rounded, while the front bumper looks similar to the one on the 3 Series. The BMW 7 Series is available in regular-length and longer L models. The 760Li trim receives an adaptive ride package, which is optional on the 750 models. However, the 750 has an optional sport package that offers a firmer suspension and 20-inch wheels. The Alpinas have unique interior and exterior trimming, 21-inch tires and a sport-tuned suspension. Standard features are BMW's iDrive, power-folding door mirrors, navigation system, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, 16-way front comfort seats, adaptive headlights, obstacle detectors and BMW Assist services. BMW individual packages with various features are also available. Also offered is a DVD entertainment system and a keyless entry and start system. The cabin looks compact, but offers plenty of room and minimal controls. |
