  2008 BMW M5 Review
  Overview

The 2008 BMW M5 is a four-door luxury sedan designed for those who demand uncompromising performance. A carryover from 2007, the 2008 M5 sees some subtle improvements in ergonomics, with a few changes to the interior, to door handles and window switches; the iDrive system, meanwhile, gets six programmable memory keys. However, the M5 touring will not be available in the US, and to American car lovers this is certainly a huge disappointment.

  Engine and Performance

The BMW M5 is available in only one trim. Powered by 5.0-liter, V-10 engine, it delivers 500 horsepower, and 383 pound-feet of torque at over 8,000 rpm. It has a six-speed manual transmission. The new M5 boasts of the most innovative drive concept in its class, the best power-to-weight ratio, luxurious appointments and outstanding everyday driving characteristics. It has a basic powertrain warranty of 48 months or 50,000 miles.

  Body and Styling

Adaptive headlights, which turn in tandem with the steering wheel, light up even winding mountainous roads more effectively. The MDrive button on the steering wheel offers a one-touch function to change settings and make the BMW M5 more sporty in character. Somewhat disappointing is the two-piece-glass panoramic roof. When tilted, both planes of glass tilt into ventilation mode, but only the front glass opens up completely. It's hard to see what practical purpose this will serve in European climate (where it is being sold). Another drawback of this otherwise great model is that it takes a really keen eye to tell the sedan from the touring. Both have the same fender vents, quadrangular tail lamps, large front air dam and side skirts. The only really noticeable difference is the tail end of the wagon.

  Safety Features

The BMW M5 comes with a number of safety features. Standard safety equipment includes full-length side curtain air bags, front seat side air bags, and traction control. The standard stability control system is programmed for performance driving. Rear seat side air bags and active head restraints are optional. The BMW M5 received the highest rating in frontal offset crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
