2008 BMW M6 Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
For those who've wanted an M version of the 6 Series, the BMW M6 does not disappoint, offering as it does a combination of comfort, luxury, performance and ease of operation. The M6 is available as a coupe and convertible. Its competitors include Jaguar XKR, Cadillac XLR-V and Aston Martin V-8 Vantage. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The BMW M6 has the same engine as the M5. The 5.0-liter V-10 revs up to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, and is controlled by a seven-speed sequential manual transmission (SMT). Though SMT is the major new feature for this year, it leaves a lot to be desired. It is clumsy at its best, and hardly the worthy innovation it is meant to be. Climate control is standard on all models. The M6 comes with a powertrain warranty of 48 months or 50,000 miles. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
Notable changes in the exterior include redesigned headlights and new LED turn signals. The redesigned front air dam with large secondary intake openings gives the engine more cooling air. For this year, the side sills are more aerodynamically contoured. The forged-aluminum, 19-inch wheels are custom-made for the BMW M6. The carbon fiber roof contributes to the excellent power to weight ratio. The four-seater M6 has M sport front seats; and twin, contoured rear seats separated by a cushion for exceptional comfort. This model also has power lumbar with backrest width adjustment.
A new feature for 2008 is the optional high-beam assist system, which turns on the high beam automatically in poor light. A simple but thoughtful feature available with this option allows the driver to bypass the automatic system and manually turn off the high beam. Another feature that stands out is MDrive, which lets the driver select suspension and drivetrain settings at the touch of a button. Though an intelligent feature, one wonders whether it will result in overtaxing the driver in changing driving conditions. |

Safety Features |
|
| |
There is no major difference in safety features between the 2008 and 2007 BMW M6 models. Standard safety features include traction control and stability control; anti-lock brakes; front seat side air bags; side curtain air bags for the coupe; rollover protection system for the convertible; and front and rear parking sensors. |
