  2008 BMW X3 Review
  Overview

For 2008, the BMW X3 gets the one feature that was not standard all these years: an all-wheel-drive configuration. Other changes include a more powerful engine and improved fuel economy.

  Engine and Performance

The 3.0-liter, in-line, six-cylinder engine delivers 260 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. Mileage shows a marked improvement over last year's model, offering 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The engine comes with a choice of a six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission or an auto-manual with overdrive. While these sound like great features, the actual handling can be a little tricky when driving conditions keep varying. The xDrive enables 100 percent of the engine torque to drive on either axle, as demanded. The BMW X3 also has dynamic stability control.

  Body and Styling

The five-seater BMW X3 runs on standard 17-inch wheels, with 18- and 19-inch wheels offered as options. The inside features some superb wood trimming, which fades, however, in comparison to the leather upholstery - easily the most striking feature of the interior's aesthetics. The car's handling is exceptionally smooth. Strangely enough - and considering the price tag of this car - the navigation system comes only as an option; the placement of the buttons is also somewhat awkward.

  Safety Features

The BMW X3 comes equipped with a head protection system that offers complete protection even during collisions of severe intensity. Also standard are active head restraints to minimize neck injuries.
