2008 BMW X5 Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
The 2008 BMW X5 is a carryover from 2007, when the dimensions of this sport utility vehicle changed: increasing 4.5 inches on the wheelbase, 7.4 inches in overall length, 2.4 inches in width and 2 inches in height. The X5 comes in two models, the six-cylinder 3.0si and the V-8 4.8i. While standard seating is for five, an optional third row increases seating capacity to seven. The BMW full maintenance program covers all factory-recommended maintenance, as covered by the service interval indicator, for four years or 50,000 miles. For 2008, the BMW X5 receives only a few minor changes, like the standard sunroof and optional power tailgate. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The 3.0si has a 260-horsepower, six-cylinder engine, while the 4.8i has a 350-horsepower, 4.8-liter V-8. A six-speed automatic transmission is common to both. Disc brakes on both ends are gigantic - 14 inches in the front and 12.8 inches in the rear. The result is a screeching halt in virtually no time, at virtually any speed. The all-independent suspension makes for a smooth and soundless ride. All BMW X5 models come with all-wheel drive and dynamic stability control, and can tow up to 6,000 pounds. The fuel economy estimates are 14 mpg in city areas and 19 mpg on highways. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
The BMW X5 has a rugged frame with smooth angles and characteristic BMW styling accents - the twin, kidney-shaped grille; adaptive xenon headlights; and L-shaped taillights. The 3.0i rides on 17-inch wheels. The iDrive uses a single knob to handle entertainment, communication, navigation and climate functions.
The attractive interior offers features like the gently curved dash, handsome wood inlays, and broad air vents. The all-in-one iDrive controller, despite some improvements, is complex and may not appeal to all drivers. The optional third-row seat is not as spacious as it is in other midsize crossover SUVs. The cargo space of 75 cubic feet is about average. |

Safety Features |
|
| |
The BMW X5 comes with dynamic anti-lock brakes and stability control; a central locking system; hill descent control; a battery safety terminal; and an added set of brake light alerts. Complementary safety measures include front-/side-impact air bags; head protection system; and front safety belts with automatic pretensioners and force limiters. These were enough to earn the X5 the highest rating in frontal offset crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. |
