  2008 Dodge Charger Review
  Overview

Dodge Charger, the original muscle car and one of America's most revered performance nameplates, was revived by Chrysler Motors in 2006. Coupes were popular during the late 1960s and 1970s, and regarded as potent muscle machines. Charger was brought back to compete with other muscle cars like the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Impala and Pontiac Grand Prix. For 2008, Charger comes with a redesigned instrument panel and more standard features across models. Dodge Charger is available in four trims: SE, SE Plus, the performance-oriented R/T, and SRT8. An SXT package, a Daytona R/T and Super Bee package are also offered. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but SXT and R/T models have the choice of all-wheel drive.

  Engine and Performance

The base SE comes with a 178-horsepower, 2.7 liter V-6 engine. The SE Plus gets a more powerful 250-horsepower, 3.5 liter V-6 engine. The R/T is fitted with a 340-horsepower, 5.7-liter, Hemi multi displacement V-8 engine. Dodge Charger SRT8 is the product of the special SRT (street and racing technology) performance division; its 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 engine generates an amazing 425 horsepower, making it the fastest Charger. A four-speed, electronically controlled automatic transmission comes with the V-6 engine in the SE and SE Plus. A specially calibrated five-speed automatic transmission comes teamed with the powerful V-8 engine fitted in the R/T and SRT8. The Hemi V-8 engines and touring suspension make the performance of the Charger a cut above other sedans. The response is quick and precise on curves and during sudden jerks. The brake assist helps in emergency braking while speeding on highways.

  Body and Styling

The current Dodge Charger is a combination of modern four-door coupe styling and traditional muscle-car design. The bold front fascia has a wide grille with a honeycomb mesh and body-colored moldings. Twin headlamps have low-beam projector lamps. Prominent wheel arches and a bold hood conclude an imposing exterior. The wheel flares are minimal. For better rigidity, the sedan is provided with 50/50 (from front to rear) weight distribution. The R/T gets three-level suspension tuning, and local-level shock absorbers. The Charger gets standard 17-inch alloy wheels, but 18-inch wheels are optional for the SE and SE Plus and standard for the R/T. The SRT 8 comes with 20-inch aluminum SRT design wheels and all-season performance tires. Dark titanium and light sandstone exterior colors, replacing marine blue and silver steel, have been introduced in 2008. Steel blue is available on the SRT8. The interiors are roomy and sport a redesigned instrument panel, a console with satin chrome accents and more appealing soft-touch surfaces. Front passengers get plenty of elbow and legroom, while in the rear legroom is ample. Headroom in models equipped with a sunroof is adequate. Long side windows aid visibility. The outside view for the rear-seat passenger may be obstructed by the C pillar. The driver could face minor inconveniences due to the low roof and steep windshield, which obstruct the overhead view. SRT8 has leather-trimmed seats with preferred suede and accents; the R/T gets only leather-trimmed seats; the SE and SE Plus get cloth surfaces. All Chargers come with low-back bucket seats in front and a bench in the rear. The 60/40-split folding rear seat is standard. The Charger comes fitted with Boston Acoustics audio system. MyGIG multimedia entertainment system on the rear seat comes standard on R/T and SRT. Standard features on the SE include manual tilt/telescoping steering column; power controlled windows, door locks and mirrors; as well as cruise control. The R/T package is similar to SXT, but comes with additional features like heated front seats, xenon headlights, remote starting, interior LED-illuminated accents, and an electronics display package. The high-performance SRT8 comes standard with special hardware and a unique trim that distinguishes it as the top performing model. It has its own instrument cluster and reconfigurable display. A navigation system and backseat video entertainment system are optional for all trims.

  Safety Features

Chrysler has not compromised the safety of occupants based on trim levels. Standard safety features on all Dodge Charger trims, including the base SE models, consist of side air bags and dual stage front air bags; four-wheel anti-lock brakes; electronic stability system; traction control; and active power booster brake assist.
