2008 Dodge Durango Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
The 1008 Dodge Durango has an available next-generation 4.7 liter engine. This engine is reported to be more powerful and fuel-efficient than the previous V-8. A single-speed transfer case can now be specified on select 4WD models - basically, that means you can get a Durango with all-wheel drive. The 2008 Dodge Durango sport utility vehicle is offered in four trim levels - SXT, SLT, Adventurer and Limited. |

| |
Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The standard engine for 2WD Dodge Durango SXT and SLT models is a 3.7-liter V-6 producing 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. Standard on Adventurer, Limited and all 4WD models is a reworked 4.7-liter V-8 that generates 303 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. All three engines are backed by automatic transmissions: the V-6 is mated to a four-speed gearbox while the V-8s use five-speed automatics with a tow-haul mode. Four-wheel-drive Durangos are equipped with a standard single-speed transfer case providing full-time four-wheel drive. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
Modern and functional, the Dodge Durango's cabin was designed with family-style versatility in mind. Depending on third-row seat style, it can carry up to seven or eight passengers. The front seats are roomy and comfortable, but adults might find second-row legroom and storage areas to be inadequate. Third-row seating is only suitable for kids. Most buyers will find cargo capacity to be more than adequate, with more than 68 cubic feet available when the third seat is folded into the floor, and as much as 102 cubic feet in all.
The SXT comes standard with 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, full power accessories, and a tilt steering wheel integrated with cruise control.
The midlevel SLT is well-equipped and upgradeable. It includes many of the SXT's options while adding fog lamps, a power driver seat and wood grain accents. SLT optional features include 20-inch chrome wheels, a power lift gate, power-adjustable pedals, heated cloth or leather front seats, and second-row bucket seats.
The Durango Adventurer is similar to the SLT; the difference lies mainly in cosmetic changes and in upgrades like cargo management system and slush-containing floor mats.
The fully equipped Limited offers 18-inch chrome wheels, heated leather bucket seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, driver memory system, auto-dimming mirrors, rear parking assist, and a CD/DVD player with premium sound.
The 2008 Dodge Durango strikes a balance between smooth and crisp handling on any road. It is also one of the fastest SUVs available in this price range. However, many car experts give it a mediocre score as its exterior styling is dated; though several reviews describe it as a tough and hunky looking car. |

Safety Features |
|
| |
Side air bags and an electronic stability control system were available as standard for the first time on last year's Dodge Durango model. The SUV has received a rating of five stars in crash tests. Standard safety features include four-wheel antilock disc brakes, stability control and side-impact head-curtain air bags. Power-adjustable pedals are standard on the Limited and optional on the SLT and Adventurer.
Advanced multistage driver and front passenger air bags are standard, and supplemental side-curtain air bags are available. Rear head restraints on crew cab models, designed for the driver's rearward visibility, have a foam-padded structure for increased protection. |
