2008 Honda S2000 Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
The Honda S2000 represents the purest expression of Honda's fun-to-drive DNA: with its two-seat, open-topped roadster configuration; and sophisticated front-engine and rear-wheel-drive platform. The sports car serves as a practical, daily-driving vehicle, but is equally at home on a racetrack. The sports concept further evolves with the addition of a club racer-inspired S2000 CR model to the Honda lineup.
For 2008 the S2000 has revised spring and damper tuning that subtly influences steering feel and high-speed vehicle behavior. Minor changes in the interior include revised instrument panel meters and modifications in seat design. Also, a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) has been added. Apart from some minor tweaking, the car has remained pretty much unchanged since it first rolled off the ramp almost a decade ago.
The 2008 Honda S2000 is offered in two trims: Standard and CR. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive S2000 rewards driving enthusiasts with a potent 2.2-liter, 16-valve, DOHC, VTEC four-cylinder engine; and a precise, short-throw six-speed manual transmission, along with tenacious handling and an ideal 50/50-weight balance. The high-revving engine delivers 237 horsepower at 7800 rpm, and 162 pound-feet of torque at 6800 rpm. Fuel economy for 2008 is rated at 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Aided by the double-wishbone front and rear suspension, body roll remains minimal. A 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution gives the car its outstanding road holding balance, especially on corners. The CR model is a natural on racetracks, and can be exceptionally stable at redline. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
The exterior is angular, modern and sleek. A long hood and flared front fenders create a racecar impression. The S2000 CR adds extensive aerodynamic bodywork that functions to significantly reduce lift and enhance chassis balance at high speeds. The driver-oriented interior is designed to be functional in much the same way as a purpose-built racecar; with excellent outward visibility and simplicity of controls. Standard models include features such as leather seats, power accessories, air conditioning, CD player, power-operated soft top, glass rear window with defroster, xenon HID headlights and 17-inch alloy wheels.
The performance-oriented CR model is faster than the standard S2000 because it weighs up to 99 pounds less. This lessening of weight has been achieved by removing air conditioning, audio systems, and the power-operated soft top in whose place a removable hardtop has been added. The CR also receives a race-tuned suspension, faster steering ratio and stickier tires (the stickier the tires, the shorter the braking distance). |

Safety Features |
|
| |
The S2000 has dual-stage, dual-threshold front air bags (SRS) for driver and front passenger; three-point seatbelts with load limiters and pretensioners; roll bar hoops; and reinforced windshield posts. Vehicle stability assist, anti-lock brakes and a tire-pressure monitoring system are standard equipment. The 2008 Honda S2000 earned four stars for protection against frontal impacts in government crash tests. It earned five stars for side-impact protection, without the side air bags. |
