  2008 Hyundai Santa Fe Review
  Overview

Its no surprise that the Hyundai Santa Fe midsize crossover has attracted a strong following, given its fuel-efficient V-6 powertrains, advanced standard safety technologies and sleek styling. For 2008, the Santa Fe Limited trim gets even better, adding a 605-watt Infinity Logic 7 audio system and a power sunroof to the long list of standard equipment; a new navigation system is added to the list of options. The 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe is available in three trim levels: base GLS, SE and Limited.

  Engine and Performance

Hyundai Santa Fe is available with a choice of two powerful and efficient V-6 engines: the economical 2.7-liter and the modern 3.3-liter, both of which feature an all-aluminum construction. The standard 2.7-liter V-6 includes continuously variable valve timing and a variable intake system that produces 185 horsepower and 183 pound-feet of torque. The 3.3-liter V-6s output is 242 horsepower and 226 pound-feet of torque, providing improved acceleration and passing power. The 2.7-liter V-6 comes with a standard five-speed manual transmission and is available with an optional four-speed automatic with Shiftronic manual control; while the 3.3-liter V-6 is mated to a standard five-speed Shiftronic automatic gearbox. All Santa Fe models come with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. AWD routes power to the wheels for the best traction in slushy, snowy or off-road conditions. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. The Santa Fe can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.

  Body and Styling

With styling that is assertive yet graceful, the Hyundai Santa Fe exterior showcases the evolving face of the Hyundai brand. The wide track provides a strong stance, improved handling and increased interior room. The 2008 Santa Fe is one of the most package-efficient crossovers in the market. Hyundai accomplished this through a platform that avoids the compromises inherent in the platform sharing of the typical midsize car. The GLS gets 16-inch alloy wheels, full power accessories, keyless entry, cruise control and a CD/MP3 player. The SE trim features 18-inch alloy wheels, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, automatic headlights, trip computer and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. The Santa Fe Limited adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, power driver seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, sunroof and a premium Infinity audio system with a six-CD changer; the navigation system and rear-seat entertainment system are optional. Some features from the Limited model are available as options on the GLS and SE; standalone options include a third-row seat with auxiliary rear climate controls; towing attachments and Bluetooth.

  Safety Features

The 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe underscores Hyundai's leadership in standardizing the most effective safety technologies. All Santa Fe trim levels come standard with electronic stability control, one of the industry's most effectual life-saving technologies. Other safety features include an anti-lock brake system with electronic brake-force distribution; six standard air bags; three-point seatbelts; adjustable head restraints; and a tire-pressure monitoring system. The Santa Fe received a perfect five stars for protection in frontal and side-impact crash tests conducted by the government. In IIHS frontal-offset and side-impact tests, the Santa Fe earned the Top Safety Pick award.
