2008 Hyundai Veracruz Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
When introduced in 2007, the Hyundai Veracruz crossover took the auto industry by storm, raising the bar on what consumers could expect in the premium midsize and crossover segment. The seven-passenger Veracruz gets even better for 2008. It has a new navigation system. And it combines the luxury and style of Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander, while offering the upscale amenities and premium craftsmanship found in a Lexus RX350 and Mercedes-Benz ML. The model is available in three trims: GLS, SE and Limited, available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive (AWD). One of the changes in the 2008 Veracruz is that earlier optional equipment is now standard. A power tailgate and a 115-volt outlet are featured on the SE model; while a Hyundai-first navigation system is now an option on the Limited model. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
Veracruz is the largest Hyundai model being sold in America today, and one of Hyundai's most expensive. It offers capable, fuel-efficient performance courtesy of a modern 3.8-liter, DOHC, V-6 engine, which delivers 260 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque. To maximize torque across the rev range, the engine utilizes continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) on the intake valves, and a variable intake system that helps cylinders breathe efficiently at both low and high rpm. To help put the power to use, the engine is mated to an Aisin six-speed gearbox with Shiftronic manual control. The Veracruz achieves zero to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds, which is just average in its class. The fuel economy is 16 mpg in city areas, 23 on highways with the front-wheel drive; it is one mpg less with an AWD. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
The Veracruz demonstrates Hyundai's product expansion and global design evolution through its continued use of organic forms to create a refined and luxurious exterior. Fluid lines combine with integrated headlights and taillights to create a unified aesthetic for the vehicle. Thanks to intelligent ergonomic engineering, intuitive design and superior craftsmanship, passengers are coddled in a rich interior inspired by boutique hotels and luxury sedans. Though the interior is spacious, seats in the third row are not very roomy. The cargo capacity is 86.8 cubic feet with the seats folded, which is less than what its competitors offer. |

Safety Features |
|
| |
The 2008 Hyundai Veracruz embraces both active and passive safety features with a host of leading-edge technologies. The vehicle's advanced engineering provides a high level of driving and is anchored by standard electronic stability control. Other safety features include an anti-lock brake system, electronic brake-force distribution, six standard air bags, three-point seatbelts, adjustable head restraints and a tire-pressure monitoring system. |
