2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
The Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class is the exciting lineup of coupes and convertibles from Mercedes-Benz, embracing a racy style and free spirit. First introduced in 1997, its subsequent redesigns included the first production of a V-6 engine, aggressive styling cues from the E-Class, and chassis components from the C-Class. For 2008, the CLK 350 comes standard with a sport suspension and 18-inch wheels, while the CLK 550 remains unchanged. A CLK 63 AMG - the Black Series - is available as a coupe. The CLK 63 benefits from extensive re-engineering, including modified suspension components, lightweight 19-inch wheels, and 14.2-inch brake discs clamped by multipiston AMG calipers. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The Mercedes-Benz CLK 350 coupe and convertible are equipped with a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter, V-6 engine. A 382-horsepower, 5.5-liter V-8 powers the CLK 550 models. The CLK 63 AMG convertible has a V-8 producing 475 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The CLK 63 Black Series coupe receives AMG's prolific 6.2-liter, V-8 engine producing 500 horsepower. This coupe takes an estimated 4.1 seconds to go from zero to 60 mph. All models are coupled with a seven-speed automatic transmission with touch shift manual options. Fuel economy is 17/25 mpg (city/highway) on the CLK 350 coupe; 15/22 mpg on the CLK 550 coupe; 17/25 mpg on the CLK 350 convertible; and 15/21 mpg on the CLK 550 convertible.
The CLK-Class offers confident and stable handling. The CLK 550 powered by the robust V-8 engine is a good blend of performance and sophistication. The CLK 63 has amazing capabilities but its supercar personality is marred by lackluster steering when compared to other cars of its class. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
Coupe or convertible, the Mercedes-Benz CLK 350 has a sweeping beltline that gives the car its sleek and elegant profile. The CLK 550 coupe is sporty and pillar-less; the streamlined design hints at the powerful performance; rear windows recede fully, adding to the open-air feeling. The CLK 63 AMG features a distinctive front air dam and side skirts, different from the standard CLK. The CLK 63 AMG has a low stance and large fenders, inspired by Mercedes-Benz's race cars. The CLK models come fully loaded with luxurious, well-equipped cabins that seat four passengers; seats come with premium leather upholstery; the rear seat splits and folds, making it easier to load cargo into the trunk. The convertible features large side windows and a slim roof design that is easily lowered or raised at the press of a button. Standard amenities include a Harman Kardon Logic 7 system, tele aid emergency assistance system, dual-zone air conditioning with sun sensor, 10-way power front seats and rain-sensing wipers.
The interior is spacious, sumptuous and elegant. Most control systems are easy and convenient for usage, but the center stack's Comand (cockpit management and data) interface remains a challenge and may take some time getting used to. |

Safety Features |
|
| |
Standard safety features include driver and passenger front-impact air bags; door-mounted driver air bags; passenger side-impact air bags; curtain overhead air bags; seatbelt pretensioners; side-impact bars; panic alarm; and power adjustable head restraints. Mercedes's electronic stability program, anti-lock brakes with brake assist technology, daytime running lights and driveline traction control further enhance driving stability and safety. |
