2008 Porsche 911 Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
The 911 is Porsche's flagship model, recognized for its strength and sophistication. Porsche lovers can expect a lot in 2008. The new and more powerful GT2, which delivers a remarkable 530 horsepower, has been added for this year. The G2T is the most powerful production model from Porsche so far. Also, the 911 Turbo gets a drop-top for the first time. Among Porsche models, the GT3 and GT3 RS are racetrack coupes, while the Targa 4 and Targa 4S are glass-roofed. This means there is no dearth of choice for auto enthusiasts who want to put their money into this ultra-luxury car. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The Porsche 911 consists of 15 trims - 911 Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera Cabriolet, Carrera S Cabriolet, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Carrera 4 Cabriolet, Carrera 4S Cabriolet, 911 Targa 4, Targa 4S, 911 Turbo, Turbo Cabriolet, 911 GT2, GT3, and GT3 RS. Porsche has packed enormous power for all 15 trims.
While the base models - Carrera, Cabriolet, Carrera 4, Carrera 4 Cabriolet and the Targa 4 deliver 325 horsepower, the S models offer enhanced power at 355 horsepower. The GT3 series deliver 415 horsepower; the Turbo series pack 480 horsepower; while the GT2, as mentioned, is the most powerful at 530 horsepower.
The 325-horsepower models run on a 3.6-liter, flat six-cylinder engine, while all other models are fitted with a 3.8-liter, H-6 engine. These have either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission with overdrive.
There is an optional upgrade available only for the Carrera S models - the power kit that raises the output to 381 horsepower. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
Few adjectives remain unused in describing this ultimate in luxury models. Porsche has a lineage built over decades. Any of the performance parameters - power, maneuverability, stability, handling, transmission operation - is a superlative. While Carrera and Carrera 4 have 18-inch wheels, Carrera S and Carrera 4S have 19-inch wheels. Porsche's active suspension management technology continually adjusts shock absorbers on uneven roads for a smooth and comfortable ride.
Seats that can be adjusted in six directions are standard, while those that can be adjusted in 12 directions are optional. Another optional feature is the sport chrono package plus, which has a stop-watch on the dashboard. This feature has been designed to satisfy the needs of sports car lovers. The Carrera 4 and 4S coupes and cabriolets have a two-tone color option. |

Safety Features |
|
| |
Anti-lock disc brakes and six air bags are standard features. The air bags consist of seat-mounted, side-impact air bags and head air bags, which emerge from the window sills when required. A tire-pressure monitoring system is optional.
For the 911, Porsche has also introduced what it calls the Porsche ceramic composite brake (PCCB). Suited for racecars, this braking system uses carbon fiber/ceramic compound for the disc brake, which makes the disc harder than steel and more resistant to temperature. The result, according to Porsche, is vastly improved braking even while the tire's grip on the road is retained. |
