2008 Subaru Forester Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
The Subaru Forester made its debut in 1998, joining the league of car-based sport utility vehicles made in the US. Built on the lines of Subaru's Impreza sedan, the Forester qualifies as a fashionable crossover vehicle. The 2008 Subaru Forester receives minor trim alterations, new equipment and changes in model-names. It is available in Base 2.5 X, Sports 2.5 X, Upscale 2.5 X L.L.Bean Edition, Sports 2.5 XT and 2.5 XT Limited trims. All-wheel drive is standard. Turbo models with an automatic transmission have all-wheel drive and an electronic stability system for 2008. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The Subaru Forester and Impreza series use the same 2.5-liter, horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower. A 224-horsepower turbo-charged version powers the 2.5 XT models. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard on all models except the 2.5 X L.L.Bean Edition, which gets a four-speed automatic. The automatic is also optional on other models. A Hill Holder clutch features on the manual-shift models, making it easier to start the car on a slope. For 2008, turbo-charged models receive Subaru's variable torque distribution. Fuel economy is 20 miles per gallon in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
The non-sheet metal parts, like the new grille, are slightly bigger; the headlight and taillight clusters give the SUV a more rugged, upscale presence. The lower bumpers and protective cladding blend with the body color. The XLL Bean Edition has retained the dual-tone paint. Adjustable shock absorbers give the Subaru Forester more ground clearance. The interiors are subtle and downright luxurious, with high-quality leather upholstery. The new center console has more storage space, while a sliding armrest provides good elbow support. The instrument panel and controls are efficiently designed. Lowering the 60/40-split rear seat increases the space from 32 to 56.4 cubic feet. Other available features include automatic climate control, heated front seats and leather upholstery. |

|
| |
Safety Features |
|
| |
The Subaru Forester earned the highest possible ratings for crash-worthiness in 40-mph frontal- and 30-mph side-impact crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Safety features include anti-lock brakes; anti-skid system; and front side air bags designed to protect the head and torso. Curtain side air bags are not available. |
