  2008 Subaru Impreza Review
  Overview

The redesigned 2008 Subaru Impreza is larger and more refined than its predecessors. It is offered as a sedan or wagon and a sport utility vehicle-type wagon, the Outback Sport. Each has all-wheel drive and a horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine. Base-level sedans and wagons are 2.5i models. WRXs have a sport suspension, improved brakes, functional hood scoop, unique seats and trim. The STI gets improved suspension, brakes and steering.

  Engine and Performance

The 2.5i models have a horizontally opposed 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 170 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque. Subaru Impreza WRX models receive a turbo-charged version of that engine, which produces 224 horsepower and 226 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines send power to four wheels through a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic with manual shift function. All-wheel drive provides plenty of traction in wet weather. Fuel economy is 20 miles per gallon in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

  Body and Styling

The Subaru Impreza gets more conservative styling upfront and a refreshed look in the rear. The new Impreza grille sits within one frame instead of three; the bumper sports a wider, flatter air dam. Standard features on the base model are pretty basic, but the WRX comes with most of the Impreza's options as standard and has specialized wheels, tires and suspension tuning. The new Impreza has a longer wheelbase, creating more interior space. New materials and styling improve the feel of the cabin. The Impreza Outback Sport; offered as a hatchback only, has a slightly raised suspension for better ground clearance and a two-tone exterior color scheme. Leather upholstery is standard on WRX and STI Limited.

  Safety Features

Safety features standard across the board on all Subaru Impreza models include anti-lock brakes and front side air bags providing head and torso protection.
