  2008 Toyota 4Runner Review
  Overview

The Toyota 4Runner is a traditional, midsize sport utility vehicle with four doors. A carryover from 2007, the fourth-generation Toyota 4Runner combines off-road competence with high standards for everyday driving comfort and safety; packaging these qualities in a design that is youthful and sporty. For 2008 the 4Runner comes with yet another important safety feature: standard roll-sensing side curtain air bags.

  Engine and Performance

The 2008 truck-based Toyota 4Runner is available in three trim levels: SR5, Sport and Limited. Buyers have a choice of V-6 or V-8 engines available in two-wheel or four-wheel drive. The standard 4.0-liter, dual overhead cam (DOHC), V-6 engine produces 236 horsepower, with 266 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The 4.7-liter, i-Force, DOHC, V-8 engine produces 260 horsepower with 306 pound-feet of torque at 3,400 rpm. In both engine types, variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) helps provide substantial low-end and midrange torque. The 4Runner's standard five-speed automatic transmission adapts gear-shifting patterns according to driving conditions and driver input. This is a capable SUV in any terrain: smooth and controlled on the road; and almost luxurious off-road, even on bumpy trails. During turns, it is tight and responsive. The 4Runner also gives excellent fuel efficiency with an estimated 16/20 mpg (city/highway) for the V-6 engine with 4WD; and 14/17 mpg (city/highway) for the V-8 version. Towing capacity is 7,300 pounds on the V-8 engine and 5,000 pounds on the V-6.

  Body and Styling

The Toyota 4Runner has a sporty and functional design. The interior is spacious and versatile , offering many convenience features. The two-tone dashboard has a three-pod instrument cluster with orange illumination. A vehicle level sensor detects when the 4Runner is on an incline and compensates the fuel gauge reading. Optional features include Bluetooth, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, navigation system, JBL audio system, third-row seat and two-tier cargo shelf. The X-REAS shock absorbers with a height-adjustable rear air suspension are optional on the Limited. While the body and structure of the 4Runner are on par with Toyota's reputation with regard to durability and reliability, the cargo capacity (a maximum of 75 cubic feet is offered) is below average and the legroom limited when the third-row seat is in use.

  Safety Features

The star safety system includes vehicle stability control with traction control; and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist to help provide optimal vehicle control and driving safety. Advanced front air bags for driver and front passenger; front-passenger seat sensor; standard front and second-row side curtain air bags; and front seat-mounted side air bags are the passive safety features available on the Toyota 4Runner.
