When Toyota introduced an all-new, sixth-generation Camry for 2007, it was the best-selling car in America. Changes this year include a new, darker wood trim in the XLE grade; also, the CE name has been dropped from the base trim. This midsize, four-door sedan offers a powerful and fuel-efficient V-6 engine, comfortable interiors and advanced safety equipment. However, buyers might have to compromise on its inconsistent fit and finish, its oversized controls and minimal steering feedback.

The 2008 Toyota base Camry is powered by a four-cylinder engine, while the other trims offer a choice of a four-cylinder or V-6 engine. The Camry's standard 2.4-liter engine develops 158 SAE horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and 161 pound-feet of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. It can be mated to a five-speed manual transmission or an electronically controlled five-speed automatic. Fuel economy is 21/31 mpg (city/highway) with either transmission. All the V-6 Camry models come equipped exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission, which offers a sequential mode for manual shifting when desired. Fuel economy is 19/28 mpg (city/highway). The smooth and strong V-6 engine makes the Camry one of the fastest midpriced sedans on the road.

The Toyota Camry stands out for its distinctive and athletic exterior. The Camry base and LE models ride on standard 16-inch steel wheels, while the sporty SE model gets aluminum, six-spoke, 17-inch wheels as standard. The roomy interior shows the attention to detail that has helped this model set a standard in sedan comfort. Both base and LE have functional interiors. Seats are wide and the fabric used for seating durable. All V-6 models feature leather seating. Controls on the two-level dash and console are easy to see and use. Large instrument panel gauges can be read at a glance, with odometer and trip meters illuminated at all times for better visibility. The base and LE versions provide a trunk capacity of 15 cubic feet, while the SE and XLE offer 14.5 cubic feet.

Standard safety features on all 2008 Toyota Camry models include dual-stage, advanced SRS air bags; seat-mounted side air bags; full-length side curtain air bags; a driver knee air bag; an anti-lock brake system with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution; and a vehicle dynamics integrated management system. Stability control and traction control are optional on all Camry trims.
