  2008 Toyota Camry Solara Review
  Overview

Toyota Camry Solara's coupe and convertible are unchanged for 2008, having received extensive upgrades during the last model year. Nine years into its model cycle, the Solara, with its sporty refinement, still offers some of the best value in its segment. Its midsize coupes and convertibles are among the most spacious, with roomy backseats. The coupe accommodates five passengers, while the convertible seats four. On the downside, the Solara has sleepy reflexes round corners, and the response of its automatic transmission is quite slow. The Solara coupe and convertible are available in three model grades: SE, Sport and SLE.

  Engine and Performance

All Solara coupe models come standard with a 2.4-liter, DOHC, four-cylinder engine that produces 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and 158 pound-feet of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. The standard five-speed automatic transmission features a gated shift with sequential shift mode to help produce a lively performance and excellent fuel efficiency. The coupe's optional all-aluminum, 3.3-liter, V-6 engine produces 210 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, and 220 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 rpm, with ample torque at low and midrange speeds. A five-speed automatic transmission with intelligent electronic controls is also optional. The Solara convertible is powered only by a standard V-6 engine. Fuel economy of the four-cylinder Solara coupe is 21-22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway, while the V-6 model records 18/27 mpg (city/highway). The convertibleā??s fuel economy is 18/26 mpg (city/highway). The handling is stable, and the ride comfortable and composed. Both four-cylinder and V-6 engines ensure a refined and smooth ride. The convertible gets a softer tuning.

  Body and Styling

All models feature eye-catching LED taillights and a standard rear spoiler that accentuates the sporty profile. The Sport grade features five-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels with a polished chrome finish; a larger profile rear spoiler; and a unique chrome exhaust tip. The Sport convertible shares the Sport coupe's dark-charcoal interior with black graphite-style trim and 17-inch alloy wheels, along with front and rear underbody spoilers and rocker panel moldings. The Solara provides room and practicality that is surprising in a coupe and convertible. While there is ample headroom and legroom in the rear seat, shoulder and hip room in both front and rear seats are generous. The cabin is composed of rich, quality materials. The combination of metallic and satin finishes, interspersed with high-quality plastics, offers a distinctive look, while the fit and finish is just right.

  Safety Features

All Solara models come with a raft of safety features, including a direct tire-pressure monitoring system; front seat-mounted side air bags; front and rear side curtain air bags; and four-wheel disc and anti-lock brakes for responsive, reliable stopping power. Vehicle stability control with traction control is optional on all V-6 versions.
