2008 Toyota Corolla Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
Toyota Corolla is easily one of the most trusted cars in America, with a reputation for reliability that is nearly four decades long. Like most Toyota vehicles it is known for quality, style and value. The 2008 Corolla comes in three model grades: the well-equipped CE, the sporty S and the top-of-the-line LE.
The roomy and comfortable 2008 Corolla offers outstanding fuel economy, with EPA estimates of 35 mpg during highway driving and 26 mpg in the city. On the flip side, important safety gadgets are optional rather than standard equipment. Corolla also lacks upscale convenience features, and has remained largely unchanged since 2003 (its competitors have been redesigned). Plus it is expensive, considering it is equipped only with basic features. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The Toyota Corolla's 1.8-liter, dual overhead cam (DOHC), four-cylinder engine produces 126 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and 122 pound-feet of peak torque at 4,200 rpm. The engine is paired with a five-speed manual transmission that drives the standard front wheels. A four-speed automatic is optional. Toyota's advanced variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) gives the Corolla engine a lively feel by optimizing power delivery through the entire speed range.
The Corolla having a standard five-speed manual transmission can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in nine seconds. It offers a quiet and smooth ride, remaining composed even when cornering at high speeds. It is nimble as a result of a stiff body structure and refined suspension tuning. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
The Toyota Corolla's interior gets top quality materials, simple styling and easy-to-use controls. The base Corolla CE features a standard variable-assist, rack-and-pinion power steering; height-adjustable driver seat; 60/40-split folding rear seat; air conditioning; 15-inch steel wheels; CD player; and outside temperature gauge. Design detailing contributes to the overall feel of high value. Trunk capacity is 13.6 cubic feet.
Exterior door handles are color-keyed to the body, while the steering wheel and dashboard are coordinated with the upholstery. In addition, both S and LE grades have, as standard, an AM/FM/CD sound system with six speakers, map lights and color-keyed body-side moldings.
Depending on the trim level, optional features include 16-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, upgraded audio systems and cruise control. |

Safety Features |
|
| |
Standard safety technology includes advanced front air bags; pretensioners and force limiters for front seatbelts; and side-impact door beams. Front seat side and full-length side curtain air bags; and an anti-lock brake system with electronic brake-force distribution are optional for all model grades. The rear seat is equipped with lower anchors and tethers for children (Latch) and a uniform child restraint anchorage system. |
