  2008 Toyota Highlander Review
  Overview

Toyota Highlander holds the distinction of being the only sport utility vehicle to cross demographic boundaries between buyers of SUVs, passenger cars, minivans and environmentally sensitive and fuel-efficient vehicles. For 2008, the Highlander raises the bar once again in the midsize SUV segment with a complete redesign. The model is a perfect blend of performance and luxury.

  Engine and Performance

All Toyota Highlander gas models are powered by a new 3.5-liter V-6 with dual, independent variable valve timing with intelligence (dual VVT-i), which delivers an impressive 270 horsepower, a 55-horsepower gain over previous models. The upgraded engine also generates an impressive 248 pound-feet of torque at 4,700 rpm. It is mated to a five-speed super, electronically controlled transmission (ECT), which offers fully automatic shifting as well as selectable manumatic sequential shifting.

  Body and Styling

Toyota Highlander is available in three trim levels - Base, Sport, and Limited. The new design gives the Highlander a more aggressive look and stance. On the exterior, the Highlander moves away from traditional SUV styling cues, making a statement of intelligence and strength over ruggedness. It has new and attractive headlamps and rear lights. Design intelligence is carried through to the refined interior, which is practical and versatile. The second-row can seat three passengers by means of a detachable, padded center section, which can be folded and stowed away in a first-row console when not in use. However, the third-row seat folds as a single unit rather than in 50/50 sections, which may irritate passengers.

  Safety Features

The Highlander offers one of the highest levels of standard safety features in the small and midsize SUV segments. Curtain side air bags cover the first two seating rows; in addition there are front side air bags and a driver knee air bag. Standard on all non-hybrid all-wheel drive (AWD) models is downhill assist control. Also standard is Toyota's star safety system, which now includes enhanced vehicle stability control and traction control; and an anti-lock brake system with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. A vehicle dynamics integrated management system puts Highlander ahead of all in its segment.
