2008 Toyota Matrix Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
The Toyota Matrix has become a major influence on the designing of modern compact cars. This five-door crossover utility vehicle (CUV) combines the style and fun of a sports coupe with the utility of a small SUV. It is available in two trims - Standard, and XR with enhanced content. Versatility and excellent fuel efficiency have made the Matrix popular among people of all ages. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The Toyota Matrix is powered by a 1.8-liter, 16-valve, twin-cam engine with variable valve timing intelligence (VVT-i), producing 126 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, and 122 pound-feet of peak torque at 4,200 rpm. It comes with a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed electronic automatic transmission. EPA-estimated mileage rating is 25 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. On the downside, there is some engine noise on acceleration. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
"Edge-web" detailing unifies sharply creased surfaces with rounded web-like contours to create strong, flowing character lines. The highlight of the sporty interior is the instrument panel, which features Optitron gauges set in cylindrical, chrome-rimmed housing. There is ample room for five people with high seating points to provide a command view of the road. The three-window profile gives the driver excellent outward visibility. The elevated roofline offers generous headroom for front and rear passengers. The rear seat provides a comfortable 36.3 inches of legroom, which is on par with many midsize cars. The split rear seat can be folded flat, providing plenty of space even for cargo. However, the interior could have been more upscale. Also the plastic trim around the stereo tends to scratch easily. |

Safety Features |
|
| |
Safety technology in the Toyota Matrix includes front air bags with advanced, multistage deployment for driver and front passenger to protect them in the event of an accident. Seat-mounted side air bags and side curtain air bags are optional for both front and rear seats. Optional features include vehicle stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution to help the driver maintain control in an emergency. Also optional is a four-wheel-drive system for better traction on slippery roads. |
