2008 Toyota Prius Review

Overview
Toyota Prius is the world's best-selling gas-electric hybrid vehicle; and increasing concern over high fuel prices has prompted the company to increase availability of the model. Prius delivers exceptional fuel efficiency and has radically less environmental impact, all this without compromising on performance or comfort. For 2008, Toyota Prius offers better value with additional option packages. The Prius is available in three trims - Base, Standard and Touring.
Engine and Performance
The 2008 Toyota Prius's hybrid synergy drive system is powered by a 76-horsepower, 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. The variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) helps to optimize power delivery across the engine speed range. The permanent-magnet electric drive motor produces a maximum power of 50 kW (67 horsepower) from 1200 to 1540 rpm, and a peak torque of 295 pound-feet from zero to 1,200 rpm. The Prius produces 110 combined horsepower with its gas engine and electric motor. However, it is not a very powerful high-speed machine, nor is it more agile than other midsize sedans available in the market.
Body and Styling
The Toyota Prius rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase that allows generous interior room and a smooth ride. The five-door liftback design looks amazing and it makes the Prius one of the most aerodynamic production vehicles in America. A wind-cheating, super-low 0.26 coefficient of drag (Cd) also helps to minimize interior noise and enhance fuel mileage. With its "monoform" design, the Prius provides 96.2 cubic feet of passenger room, making it a midsize car. The rear seat offers a generous 38.6 inches of legroom. The liftback design combined with the standard 60/40-split fold-down rear seatbacks give the Prius outstanding cargo capacity and the flexibility that other hybrid cars lack. However, inspite of all the accolades the model has received, it has a few disappointing interior plastics.
Safety Features
All Toyota Prius models are equipped with standard seat-mounted side-impact air bags as well as side curtain air bags. Front seatbelts come with pretensioners and force limiters. The Prius also has front air bags and three-point seatbelts for all rear-seating positions. Anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, traction control, and electronic brake-force distribution all combine to ensure safety to all passengers within the vehicle. Vehicle stability control is optional.
