The 2008 Volvo XC70 is a crossover between a sport utility vehicle and a wagon. In many respects, the XC70 is a conventional station wagon, closely related to the Volvo V70. For 2008, the XC70 comes with a more powerful engine and seating for five. It is quiet, easily maneuvered and pleasant. The XC70 has several advantages over many truck-based SUVs, including better fuel economy, handling and ride.

The 2008 Volvo XC70 comes with a 3.2-liter, inline six-cylinder engine that produces 235 horsepower. It is teamed with a standard six-speed automatic transmission, with manual mode for driver-controlled gear changes. All-wheel drive is also standard. Volvo's four-C driver-adjustable suspension system is available with the XC70. Hill descent control has been designed to keep the vehicle in motion while driving on undulating terrain. The fuel economy is rated at 15 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The XC70 gets a ULEV-II environmental classification.

The 2008 Volvo XC70 features a new signature crossbar grille, like the one on the XC90 SUV. Bright fog-light surrounds and dark bumper cladding distinguish it from the V70. Adaptive HID headlights are optional. Ground clearance is 8.27 inches. The XC70 seats five. It has a simple dash layout with a center stack that incorporates audio and climate controls. The rear seat splits 40/20/40, offering flexibility of seating for three or two outboard passengers separated by a wide armrest. Backrests can be folded separately to create a larger load compartment with an entirely flat floor. An extensive list of standard amenities can be augmented with a world-class sound system. The audio package includes premium sound Dynaudio with a 650-watt amplifier, Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround Sound, 12 Dynaudio speakers, six-CD changer, rear seat headphone jacks and Sirius satellite radio. The Volvo navigation system with DVD map data and remote control; and a dual-screen rear seat entertainment system are also available.

The extensive list of safety features also includes the next generation whiplash protection system (WHIPS), dynamic stability and traction control (DSTC), tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), side-impact air bags for the front seats, side curtain air bags, electronic stability system and enhanced impact protection for pedestrians and cyclists. New options available for the first time on the XC70 run the gamut from adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support, to the blind spot information system (BLIS) and personal car communicator (PCC) with keyless drive, two-way car communication and heartbeat sensor.
