2008 Volvo XC90 Review |
| |
Overview |
|
| |
The 2008 Volvo XC90 is a family vehicle that offers top-notch interiors, an excellent safety record and comfortable ride. This midsize sport utility vehicle is available in three trim levels: the base 3.2, V-8 AWD and V-8 AWD Sport. The base model is available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It can seat up to seven people with optional additional seats. The XC90's main competitors include the Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Cadillac SRX. The 2008 Volvo XC90 is a carryover from 2007. |

Engine and Performance |
|
| |
The Volvo XC90 is powered by a 235-horsepower, 3.2-liter, six-cylinder engine for the front-wheel drive; and a 311-horsepower, 4.4-liter, V-8 engine for the all-wheel drive. Both are controlled by a six-speed automatic transmission. When equipped for towing, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
The XC90 V-8 Sport gains firmer springs and struts as well as thicker stabilizer bars for a high level of stability when cornering. The steering has also been modified for a quicker response. |

Body and Styling |
|
| |
The Volvo XC90 is very comfortable, but not as luxurious as some of the other vehicles in its class. A third row seat is standard on the V-8 and V-8 Sport, and optional on the 3.2. Other standard features that come with the third-row seats include a load-leveling suspension and third-row climate and audio controls. The second-row bench seat comes with a 40/20/40-split configuration and is available with an integrated child booster seat. The leather upholstery is optional for the 3.2 trim, but standard on the V-8 and V-8 Sport. An auto-dimming rearview mirror is the newest feature that comes as standard on all trims.
The 3.2 trim has 17-inch wheels, while the V-8 has 18-inchers. The V-8 Sport comes with a sport suspension and 19-inch rims, as well as body-colored fenders, a chrome grille and silver scuff plates.
A high-performance sound system comes with all XC90s. For increased listening pleasure, V-8 models can be equipped with a Dynaudio premium sound system. This includes a six-CD changer, auxiliary input, MP3 capability, Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround Sound, 650-watt amplifier and 12 Dynaudio speakers. A dual-screen rear seat entertainment system is also available to help preserve family harmony on the road. And to help guide the driver to the target destination, the Volvo navigation system with DVD map data and remote control is another popular option. |

Safety Features |
|
| |
All Volvo XC90 models come with roll stability control (RSC); dynamic stability and traction control (DSTC); and a side-impact protection system (SIPS) with side air bags and inflatable curtains for all three rows. Volvo's state-of-the-art blind spot information system (BLIS) is available on all XC90s. Active bi-xenon headlamps with automatic level control, standard on the V-8 Sport, can be specified for all other models. |
