| History |
Saab is the premier automotive brand started by Swedish manufacturer SAAB Automobile AB. It is a manufacturer of premium cars and currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors. It is the exclusive automobile royal warrant holder as appointed by the H.M., the King of Sweden.
From the beginning, Saab has built a reputation for iconoclasm and ingenuity in design, engineering and turbocharged performance. Saab, as an automotive brand, is well known for being a pioneer in both safety and green technologies.
The name SAAB is actually an acronym. It comes from "Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget", which means 'Swedish Aircraft Company'. The original Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget was established in 1937 for building aircraft for the Swedish Air Force. As World War II was ending, it was apparent that the company's market for military aircraft would decline and after considering other options, Saab decided to move into the passenger car market. It was introduced by 16 Aircraft engineers and the aircraft heritage of the company is apparent in the designing philosophy.
The pervasive design philosophy sets the Saab apart from its competitors. All Saab models feature cockpit-inspired interiors, the ergonomic controls, and the sleek, aerodynamic lines. And all these, you can feel in the drive. Saab turbo technology commands swift take-offs, while Saab-tuned suspensions are designed for quick and responsive moves. |
 |
| Expansion |
Saab designers are introducing new innovations such as turbo engines, heated seats, active head restraint systems, cabin air filters, headlamp washers and more, over the years. The cabin of the Saab Cars would remind you of the cockpit of a plane, because before Saab AB made cars, they made jets. Saab introduced its first car series Saab 92 in the year 1949. More than 20,000 Saab 92's were built between 1949 and 1956 and had a lower coefficient drag than many of recent cars.
A common feature of Saab car types is the use of the number 9 in the model numbers except for Saab Turbo X. The vehicle lineup includes 9-3 Sports Sedan, 9-3 Convertible, 9-3 SportCombi, Turbo X, 9-5 Sedan, 9-5 SportCombi and the 9-7 X SUV. |
