| History |
The Saturn is a US automotive brand introduced by the Saturn Corporation. The Saturn Corporation began in December 1982 with a group of people from various fields in the automotive industry. Many people from production, assembly, design, prototyping, sales, finance, as well as those in the corporate "white-collar" positions, joined together to form a group called "the 99".
It was established on January 7, 1985, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors (GM), and is active almost exclusively in the United States and Canada. In 1990, GM began manufacturing Saturn automobiles, largely in response to the success of Japanese small-car imports in the US. |
 |
| Expansion |
During the first decade of the 21st century, GM moved the brand upmarket, to the mid-price segment and positioned it as the company's "green" brand; touting fuel-efficient hybrids and crossovers. Saturn is renowned for its environmentally-conscious manufacturing processes and innovations, such as flexible plastic side panels on its cars to avoid minor dents.
Saturn is also reputed for its company-wide no-haggle sales philosophy. Saturn dealers are encouraged to sell vehicles at listed MSRP price. Saturn automobiles's customer satisfaction with dealer service is among the highest of any car brand in the US.
In 2005, Saturn Relay became the first Saturn vehicle to run without polymer side paneling. The Saturn Relay was built in the Doraville, Georgia production facility. The lack of polymer side paneling in Saturn Relay production was carried over to the all new Saturn vehicles released from the 2007 model year onwards.
In 2005, Saturn introduced the VUE Green Line featuring the best highway gas mileage of any SUV. And since 2007, Saturn has come up with five new models and two fuel-efficient hybrids. |
